The problem of insufficient implementation of public policies and the lack of standardized methodologies in solid waste management in Ecuador negatively impacts public health and the environment. The main objective is to analyze the impact of these policies, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement to strengthen waste collection, disposal, and treatment. To this end, a qualitative documentary methodology was adopted, based on a descriptive and explanatory design and cross-sectional analysis. Thirteen studies on experiences from various cantons and parishes were reviewed, complemented by regulatory documents, technical reports, and official statistics. Through content analysis and the use of a documentary analysis matrix, key factors such as the legal framework, available infrastructure, and public health outcomes were categorized. The results reveal deficiencies in policy implementation and monitoring, as well as limited citizen participation and insufficient institutional coordination. They also underscore the need to adopt circular economy models, incorporate modern technologies, and promote environmental education to encourage source separation. In conclusion, solid waste management in Ecuador requires greater commitment from the Decentralized Autonomous Governments, civil society, and the private sector to strengthen environmental governance, harmonize methodologies, optimize infrastructure, and raise public awareness, ensuring the reduction of health risks, pollution mitigation, and long-term sustainability.
