Abstract
NIETO-CANARTE, Carlos Alberto et al. Sustainable domestic plastic waste management in El Guayacán Parish, Quevedo Canton. e-Rev. Multidiscip. Saber [online]. 2025, vol.3, e-RMS02032025. Epub Oct 25, 2025. ISSN 2960-2467. https://doi.org/10.61286/e-rms.v3i.180.
Plastic solid waste has become a serious environmental concern and a matter of social interest. It is currently regarded as one of the key issues in global environmental sustainability. This research project aims to explore the processing of high-density polyethylene (HDPE2) plastic, the technologies employed in its recycling, and the broader factors influencing its use within the industry. A diagnostic research approach was applied, allowing for an assessment of the current reality regarding plastic waste management. To conduct this study, a theoretical review of the subject was undertaken using an exploratory experimental design, incorporating quantitative, qualitative, analytical, and inductive methods. This methodological framework facilitated an economic, environmental, and social feasibility analysis of plastic waste, assessing its potential for commercialisation as raw material in the production of new, cost-effective products. Following data analysis from surveys, interviews, and a pilot plan carried out in El Guayacán Parish, the study concluded that the project is economically, environmentally, and commercially viable for the establishment of a plastic products company that effectively utilises generated waste.
